If you like nothing better than lacing up those trusty walking boots and getting better acquainted with the local countryside and coastline, you’re in luck. Saturday 14th May marks the start of this year’s Suffolk Walking Festival, a three-week festival of walking that sees locals and visitors join forces to stride their way around the county.
At Orwell Meadows, we’re lucky enough to be situated right in the heart of Suffolk, giving our guests unprecedented access to some of the finest walks the area has to offer. There is a fantastic range of walks for people of all ages and fitness levels, from 1-5 mile strolls to 10+ mile marches.
The diversity of Suffolk means there’s something to satisfy every ambler’s tastes, from beautiful walks over heathland, through forests and reed beds beside the sea, to circular walks designed specifically for parents with prams.
Here’s just a small selection of some of the walks that start within easy reach of Orwell Meadows.
This guided walk through the park is a fantastic way to explore the heritage and landscape of the area through the ages, from medieval times to the modern day. This 1.5 mile walk also takes in the Cobbold family estate.
The walk starts at 11am on 14th May 2016 at the Stable Block, Holywells Park, Cliff Lane, Ipswich IP3 0PG. The walk finishes at the stable block café and the £4 fee also includes a cup of tea or coffee and even a slice of cake!
If you like to take a few snaps while you stroll, this 4.5 mile walk, starting at the HMS Ganges Museum car park in Shotley Marina, IP9 1QJ, is an excellent way to combine your twin pleasures with an exploration of the stunning Suffolk coastline.
The walk starts at 5.15pm on 16th May 2016, so you can take in the ‘golden hour’ and the sunset with the Wild Adventures Under Suffolk’s Skies team, who will be hosting the walk. There’s also professional tuition included in the £32 price for beginner and intermediate photographers, but you will have to bring your own camera equipment.
Just a short walk from Orwell Meadows is Ravenswood Primary School, IP3 9UA, the start of a delightful linear walk through the lovely woods separating the River Orwell and Ipswich town centre.
This heath walk starts at 10.20am on 18th May 2016, and is led by a volunteer from the Stepping Out in Suffolk group. You should allow approximately 2 hours for this 3.75 mile walk, and after all that stomping there’s plenty of cafés and restaurants at The Waterfront for some well-earned refreshments.
